A Father’s Role during His Wife’s Pregnancy

Category : Babies

A Father’s Role during His Wife’s PregnancyA wife’s pregnancy can be one of the happiest times for a husband and soon to be father. However, it can be one of the scariest times for both of them as well. While the soon to be father is not the one actually carrying the child, they can still feel a lot of the physical and emotional stress that comes with a pregnancy. It is during this time that the man has to be strong for both himself and his wife. There is a lot a father must do during his wife’s pregnancy in order to make the experience as easy as it can be for the wife.

A father should be prepared to take on more household duties for their wife during a pregnancy. This includes activities like cooking, laundry, and cleaning the house. A woman will most likely not have the energy or will to continue carrying on these tasks while they are carrying a child, and if they are, they need to be relaxing as much as possible anyway. A father should gladly take up the majority of housework while the wife relaxes and stays focused on herself and her unborn child.

Also, a father should make sure to nurture their wife as much as possible during a pregnancy. If she wants a massage, give her a massage. Make sure she is eating healthy for both her sake and the child’s sake. Ensure that the wife is getting a lot of rest and relaxation; straining herself during a pregnancy can have very dangerous consequences. Coach and encourage her a lot; let her know you enjoy rubbing her belly and feeling the baby kick, and do not hesitate to attend parenting classes with her. Get used to practicing breathing with her;  both of you are going to need it.

Pregnancy tends to be a big mystery to fathers, but they should get as much information as possible about it. To this end, it is advised that you always visit the doctor when your wife has to go visit the doctor. Ask any questions you can so you can feel more comfortable about the pregnancy as a father. These visits with your wife’s doctor will also allow you to stay current with your baby’s progress. You can even get a sneak peek of sorts  at your child with an ultrasound. Doing all of this will help your wife see that you are there for her in one of the most important times of her life and yours, and she will definitely appreciate it.

While the mother tends to be the star during pregnancy, there is plenty a father has to do in order to play the secondary role. While pregnancy is definitely one of the most stressful times for both father and mother, it turns out to be one of the most rewarding times, even more so if the father is willing to step up, aid and comfort their wife as much as they can.

Dads and their newborns

Category : Babies

Dads do not feel like a dad while they watch their wives or girlfriends swell with a child/ children. They feel the first connection to their offspring the moment they see them pop out of mommy or the first time they touch them. A new born is simply a miracle. When a dad hold his new born for the first time he feels empowered to protect them forever. Dare I say especially if it is a baby girl?

The first thing that dads do and it is something that remains throughout the life of their offspring is look. They stare longingly and incredibly long at kids. I say this because every picture I have of my daughter’s father his head is held down. I had to beg him to look at me- the mother- trying to get a picture of him holding his daughter while looking ‘dotingly ’at her mom.

Doting dads are present among all races, creed and breeds. It is important that dads make a connection with their newborns as soon as mommy. Yes, a nursing mom’s connection is undeniable and effortless but dads try the following if you want to connect, stay connected and be loved and respected like mommy as your baby grows. As dads you should:

  1. Take any opportunity to clean or bathe your newborn- this is important as it creates a chance to feel the softness of the baby and for the baby to know your touch which is quite different from mommy’s. Be gentle but be unique in your bathing pattern. Watch mom and maybe try to do something a little different.
  2. Talk to your baby- the baby needs to hear your voice. Your newborn must be able to not only hear it but associate it with the most significant male that will be in his/her life. Have a special way to greet your newborn that is distinctly yours.
  3. Dad must feed newborns too- It is important that the other provider of nourishment be the dad. Moms get the nature way: dads get the nurture way. The baby’s first introduction to bottles, spoons or cups should come from the dad. This gives dad a special place in the child’s needs and so cements his position as a caregiver.
  4. Dads should also welcome alone time- this will encourage dependency. As dads, you should not only help out when mom is in the kitchen. The child needs to know that when he/she cries it may be either parent who will come to answer the call.
  5. Dads should keep their own records and photo album- you will see the purpose of this later. It is not sufficient for the dad to be taking the pictures and mom writing the notes. Children will later connect with dads if they see that dad was a doting dad from the very beginning- just like mom.

Dads just need to be present so that the child grows and knows that love, security and care exist on his part too.
